Accelerated Reading
We're delighted to have the Accelerated Reader (AR) system fully operational! Children in Primary 5, 6, and 7 are now actively using AR, a powerful tool designed to precisely meet the individual reading needs of every pupil.
For AR to be most effective, we need the school and home to work together. We encourage all parents to log on to Accelerated Reading Home Connect to view your child's progress—you can see their targets, points earned, and the books they’ve read.
How AR Works
-
Finding the Right Fit: In early September, pupils will take a Star Reading test on the school laptops. This test assigns a specific book level that guides them to a wide selection of books perfectly matched to their reading ability. This ensures the reading is always challenging but never overwhelming.
-
Reading and Quizzing: Once a book is finished, it’s quiz time! Pupils complete a book quiz using the AR software to earn points, with each book being worth a different amount.
-
Goal Setting and Tracking: Pupils are challenged to reach a set target before an agreed deadline. They are rewarded for meeting this goal. We constantly track and monitor progress: once the target is met, they'll sit another Star Reading Test, get a new book level, and a new goal to strive for.
Key Benefits of Accelerated Reader
-
Increased Motivation: AR turns reading into a fun, rewarding activity, allowing students to choose books that genuinely interest them and providing instant feedback.
-
Improved Skills: Regular reading practice helps pupils build reading stamina, strengthen word recognition, and develop better comprehension skills.
-
Personalised Learning: The system gives teachers detailed reports, allowing us to monitor reading habits and comprehension and provide targeted, effective support and guidance.
We've already seen that pupils participating in the Accelerated Reader programme show significant improvements in their reading abilities and develop a real love for reading. We firmly believe this will continue to support your child’s academic growth.
