STEM in P5-6

23rd Jun 2026

Our P5–6 pupils had a fantastic STEM Day linked to their World Around Us topic, Cities Across the World.

Working in teams, the children planned, designed and built skyscrapers using only newspaper and masking tape. Their structures were then put through a strength test with a weighted bean bag and a “hurricane test” using a hairdryer!

The next challenge was to create a protective capsule for an egg, which was then dropped from our very own skyscraper – Mr Woods on a ladder! The pupils showed great creativity and problem-solving skills as they worked to keep their eggs safe.

To finish the day, the children carried out a penny oxidation experiment using salt and vinegar. This helped them learn why the copper on the Statue of Liberty has turned green over time due to exposure to oxygen and salty sea air.

It was a wonderful day filled with creativity, curiosity, teamwork and learning. Well done to all our budding scientists and engineers!
