Biodiversity

17th Jun 2025

Today our Eco Committee welcomed Danielle, a Biodiversity Officer from Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, who shared her expertise with our pupils.

Danielle spoke to the children about the wonderful variety of plants and animals we can find in our immediate surroundings, from the tiniest insects to the more familiar creatures. She also discussed some of the challenges and threats facing our local biodiversity and, most importantly, how we can all play a part in helping to protect and support these vital little species.

The highlight of the day for many was the practical session – a minibeast hunt around the school grounds! Armed with magnifying glasses and nets, the children eagerly explored different habitats, carefully observing and identifying the amazing array of creatures that call our school home. It was fantastic to see their curiosity and excitement as they got a close-up look at everything.

This visit was a brilliant opportunity for our pupils to connect with nature, understand the importance of biodiversity, and learn how their actions can make a positive difference to the environment around them. Huge thanks to Danielle for providing such an enriching and inspiring experience for our Eco Committee and our KS2 children.
